Thank you for giving me the floor. I am a UN Youth Delegate from Belgium. Together with my colleague, I am part of the official Belgian delegation, which is an example of how my country is putting into practice the principle of participation and inclusion.
As the preamble of the 2030 Agenda states, the future of humanity and of our planet lies in our hands, and in the hands of today’s younger generation. It will be for all of us to ensure that the journey is successful and its gains irreversible.
In other words, the 2030 Agenda is not for the next generation, but an Agenda with the next generation. Youth inclusion is not only fair, because half of the world’s population is under 30. It is also necessary for the realization of the SDGs and it is beneficial for society as a whole! All SDGs are relevant for youth. As young people we do not want to limit ourselves to the most obvious topics such as education or work. We have an opinion and young experts in all sectors covered by the 2030 Agenda. Moreover, having grown up in an ever more interconnected world, we are used to seeing problems and solutions in multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral, and solidary ways, which makes us a key actor for leveraging interlinkages between all the SDGs already now, we are no passive beneficiaries mr Sidibé we are moving.
There are many ways in which young people are included in both the implementation of the SDGs as well as in their review. a few examples of the second: the Slovenian UN Youth Delegate wrote five pages of the VNR, the Dutch UN Youth Delegates are co-presenting the VNR, and we in Belgium provided input to the VNR-penholders in two consecutive rounds.
We hope these are examples that can inspire other delegations to take similar approaches and to look for the best possible way to engage with national youth in their SDG and 2030 Agenda-related activities.
